Bob > Canon 24mm TS/E tilt/shift lens without tilt at f/3.5. There is very little depth of field.
Bob > Using tilt (actually, swing) to move the plane of best focus parallel to the locomotives. Canon 24mm TS/E at f/3.5. Depth of field did not increase. Notice that the far right side of the locomotive nose is still out of focus.

In normal use, we would both tilt the lens and stop it down to f/16 or f/22.
Bob > 24 and 45mm Canon tilt/shift lenses. The tilt mechanism also rotates in the lens mount so that the plane of best focus can be tilted to any angle.
Bob > Directional light, as from the halogen spotlight used here, makes details pop and produces a good simulation of natural sunlight.
Bob > Two diffused fluorescent fixtures produced this diffuse light. The model looks flat, featureless and unappealing. For layout photography, turn off any and all fluorescent lights in the room and provide your own directional lighting.
Bob > This scene in a Macbeth color checking booth was illuminated with a daylight simulation. Most digital cameras on auto white balance can do a reasonable job.
Bob > The same scene illuminated under tungsten. The majority of digital cameras, including my Canon DSLR, produce a horrible orange cast when set to automatic white balance.
Bob > Using manual white balance on the camera can fix the orange cast under tungsten.
Bob > The dull colors in this photo come from cool white fluorescent lighting in this Macbeth color checking booth. This is why you should avoid using common fluorescent lights for photography and for general layout illumination. It is possible to find fluorescent bulbs with a CRI (color rendering index) greater than 90 but they are extremely rare and very expensive.
